During severe bleaching, some corals turn bright shades of purple, orange, and pink in a final effort to produce their own “sunscreen” and survive. Thankfully, coral reefs experience a huge variation in the timing and location of severe bleaching. Reefs proximal to one another can display very different bleaching thresholds. Humanity must rapidly and dramatically reduce global greenhouse gas emissions to buy time for the health of our reefs. Reefs that show increased resilience to warming ocean temperatures can serve as islands of conservation and restoration for these ancient, wondrous animals and, in turn, boost the overall health of the oceans. High import taxes have made importing newer, more efficient cars prohibitively expensive for most Ethiopians. Mid-century Peugeot 404 and 504s, some almost 70 years old, are still in use as taxis in the town of Harar, Ethiopia. For him the used vehicle is an economic lifeline, allowing him to run his own business and work on his own terms. John Mwangi’s 22-year-old Toyota, which the 34 year old Kenyan uses to buy and sell produce in the capital city of Nairobi. “Everyone is driving nowadays – there are so, so many traffic jams. We have a lot of air pollution. I’m a car importer, but importing more cars isn’t the answer.” – Peter Oisebe, used car dealer. Matatus/minibuses in the central business district of Nairobi. The used vehicles are imported and then modified once in Kenya, where mechanics add extra seats and remove the catalytic converter. A queue of minibuses, commonly referred to as matatus in Kenya, wait for passengers. “An average guy like me can’t afford to buy a new vehicle. The only thing we can do is maintain the vehicle properly.” - Peter Karanja Njuguna, matatu/minibus driver. The Furtwängler Glacier in 2014 (top) and 2020 (bottom). While there is more snow in the 2020 image, most of it is seasonal. Four fragments of ice are visible in the 2014 picture but in 2020 only two remain. Sarah Hueniken and Will Gadd climb the Rebmann Glacier in 2014 (top). By 2020, the same wall of ice had melted significantly and become potentially dangerous to climb (bottom). The Furtwängler Glacier in 2014 (top) and 2020 (bottom). These images show the break-up and shrinkage of what was once the eastern portion of the glacier. By 2020, it was just about 20 metres wide. Will Gadd climbing fragments of Mount Kilimanjaro’s Furtwängler Glacier in 2014 (top) and 2020 (bottom). These images, shot from a similar location, show the dramatic retreat of the Furtwängler. Another piece of ice behind the glacier has now gone. A fin of ice, part of Kilimanjaro’s Easter Icefield, in 2020 (top) and 2014 (bottom). The images show how much the ice feature has shrunk in the last six years. qaal8 qaal7 qaal6 qaal5 qaal 3 qaal 2 nkwo 5 nkwo 4 nkwo 3 nkwo 2 nkwo 1 Remake Hub t-shirt Remake Hub eyewear Menaye Loom with Kenneth Kenneth Ize Loom Flight302Memorial.DuncanMoore Flight302Memorial.DuncanMoore Flight302Memorial.DuncanMoore Flight302Memorial.DuncanMoore Flight302Memorial.DuncanMoore Flight302Memorial.DuncanMoore Flight302Memorial.DuncanMoore Flight302Memorial.DuncanMoore Flight302Memorial.DuncanMoore Flight302Memorial.DuncanMoore Flight302Memorial.DuncanMoore Flight302Memorial.DuncanMoore Flight302Memorial.DuncanMoore Flight302Memorial.DuncanMoore Flight302Memorial.DuncanMoore Flight302Memorial.DuncanMoore Flight302Memorial.DuncanMoore COP 25 Madrid COP 25 Madrid COP 25 Madrid COP 25 Madrid COP 25 Madrid COP 25 Madrid COP 25 Madrid COP 25 Madrid COP 25 Madrid COP 25 Madrid COP 25 Madrid COP 25 Madrid COP 25 Madrid COP 25 Madrid COP 25 Madrid COP 25 Madrid COP 25 Madrid COP 25 Madrid COP 25 Madrid COP 25 Madrid COP 25 Madrid COP 25 Madrid COP 25 Madrid COP 25 Madrid 1X9A7291 1X9A7307 1X9A7308 1X9A7318 1X9A7321 1X9A7323 1X9A7327 1X9A7341 1X9A7344 1X9A7352 1X9A7353 1X9A7355 1X9A7359 1X9A7362 1X9A7363 1X9A7371 1X9A7378 1X9A7380 1X9A7382 1X9A7383 1X9A7384
